My name is Cliff Regino. I am new to the craft of making stringed instruments, or lutherie as some people may call it. Friends and family often ask, how did I get into this and why did I get into this? The simple answer is that I love the arts - music and quality wood craft.
The long story is that I have a rich history of sharing my creativity through art, music and creating things out of wood. At a young age, I excelled at drawing and sketching, then in my teens and early twenties I became confident enough to share my voice in high school choir, and eventually university vocal jazz, which then led to singing with local bands at a variety of shows and venues. I've always had natural talent in fine arts. In the midst of all of this, I was also passionate about building things out of wood in my dad's workshop. Beyond university, I began working in the corporate world and soon my priorities shifted and found myself out of the arts, and inhibiting my creative nature.
In late 2013, I splurged on my first good quality guitar - I wanted a new guitar and wanted to revive the music in my life . I was truly amazed by the look, the feel, the sound of it. There was a definite connection to this guitar and sparked a passion for sound. I didn't realize that guitars could be made so well, and play so comfortably. From there, my curiosity grew for more information on how guitars were built. I would spend hours on the internet watching videos of well-known guitar brands showcasing their factories, and their process of making a guitar. The thought of building my own guitar crossed my mind, although, it was intimidating.
In the spring of 2014, I visited a local wood company in Calgary, AB in search of wood for an office desk I was planning to build for months. This store has a wide variety of wood and offered various classes and to some degree, resembled a maze. During my search for this wood, I stumbled upon a section of pre-fabricated guitar necks, bridges, tops, backs and sides. As my curiosity grew further, I discovered a small isolated guitar shop on the second floor - nothing like I've ever seen. It was amazing. At this moment I became committed to making a guitar.
It was then when I enrolled in the 3 month class. I embraced every moment of learning, and for me, the shop evolved into a sanctuary. With my teacher and now close friend, we handcrafted a beautifully detailed quality guitar. Although, not just any guitar, the first 'Regino' guitar.
Since then, I have created my own shop and sanctuary at my home in Dewinton where I have committed to creating quality, handcrafted, and detailed guitars for years to come. Please join me in my journey of music, art and my passion for sound.
